What is Cerebral palsy (CP)?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a disorder which damages muscle tone, movement, and motor skills (the movement in a coordinated and purposeful way).Normally it is caused by brain damage that occurs before or during a baby’s birth, or during the first 3 to 5 years of a child’s life. This can also lead to other health issues, including vision, hearing, and speech problems; and learning disabilities.

Mainly Cerebral Palsy is classified into three types which are as follows:

  • Spastic cerebral palsy

Spastic cerebral Palsy causes stiffness and movement difficulties.

  • Dyskinetic (athetoid) cerebral palsy

Dyskinetic cerebral palsy leads to involuntary and uncontrolled movements

  • Ataxic cerebral palsy

Ataxic cerebral palsy is a disorder that causes a problem with balance and depth perception.

How Cerebral palsy (CP) is traditionally treated?

Different kinds of therapies and treatment options are utilized to help patient achieve their maximum potential in growth and development.

Following mention are the ways used for the treatment of Cerebral Palsy

  • Medications

Certain medications help children with cerebral palsy to control symptoms

  • Surgery

Surgery can help people with cerebral palsy reduce spasms, increase flexibility, and gain more control of muscles and limbs. However, it’s important to note that surgery isn’t an appropriate option for every child with cerebral palsy, and it also comes with risks.

  • Complementary and Alternative Treatment Options

The most common types of CAM treatments for cerebral palsy patients include:

Energy Therapy

Movement Therapy

Mind and Body Techniques

Physiotherapy

Aqua Therapy

Though there are options available in Pakistan to help patient suffering from Cerebral Palsy but there is no exact treatment, with promising results up till now.

How Stem Cell therapy help patients of Cerebral Palsy?

Stem cell therapy has been used for the treatment of cerebral palsy for many years worldwide, over the course of last few years Institute of Regenerative Medicine has treated many children with CP with positive results reported by more than 90% of parents.

The main stem cell treatment results include:

  • replacement of lost brain cells;
  • Repair or protection of damaged nerve cells.

Fetal stem cell treatment helps to limit the damage to cells in the brain and makes the symptoms of cerebral palsy more manageable.

A combination of routine methods and stem cell therapy leads to a number of improvements including:

  • reduction of hypertonicity in extremities
  • improved balance
  • normalized function of internal organs
  • better social adaptation
  • easier care for the child
  • increased mental development, such as patience, interest in external things, concentration, memory, and learning ability

Stem cell transplantation therapy is used to directly augment the regenerative abilities of an injured brain. It opens new opportunities in treating cerebral palsy. The grafted stem cells are able to ameliorate severe injury-related neurological defects.

Stem cell therapy is a very powerful driver, and the best results are reported in combination with physiotherapy and occupational therapy to improve movement and mobility, and speech therapy to improve communication skills.
